New York City in the late 1980s was wracked with crime and street violence. The murder rate in 1989 was 1,905. In 1990, it surged to 2,245 -- more than seven times the current rate.
One of the victims was a 22 year-old tourist named Brian Watkins from Provo Utah, visiting the city with his family. Traveling by subway to a late dinner, they were accosted by a gang of street toughs looking for quick cash.
When the gang slashed his father and assaulted his mother, Brian stepped forward to defend them. He died from a knife wound to the chest. The tragedy quickly became a national news story and the call went out for improved security and emergency communications throughout the city and the subways.
John Mattaboni, the founder of Valley Networks, was part of a five-man team chosen to design, build and implement that new emergency communications network for the New York City subway system, a $20 million plus contract.
To maintain three million daily riders moving reliably, this computer-based network had to keep the subway operations managers communicating with thousands of field agents, day-in day-out, 24/7/365. Not an easy task in the age of DOS and Novell. Ten minutes of downtime would be an emergency. An hour could get the mayor’s attention.
After the towers fell in NYC on 9-11, the system’s recorded communications helped federal agencies piece together some of the mayhem going on below ground on that fateful morning. Not long after, John moved his family to the pastoral beauty of the Lehigh Valley and began Valley Networks, Inc.
Needless to say, John knows what it is to be responsible for mission critical systems. And he imbues that same sense of accountability to every employee, practice and project with Valley Networks.
John has been the Chairman of the Lehigh Valley Chamber's Techfest Technology Committee and organized their annual conference. He has written for multiple technology venues and appears from time to time on local television newscasts to talk about technology issues of the day.
Here at Valley Networks, we take our responsibilities and commitments seriously.
Your faith and trust in us will be well-placed.
